In the last 12 years we BAIKAL TREKKING have led around 25 tours over the ice of Baikal. So we have all the know how to organize a tent camp on ice with people who never have done it before. And we have all the necessary gear for it. If the tour is several days long, we usually stay most of the nights on the shore. So it is more “comfortable” because we make a big campfire. It is easier to cook on the campfire than on petroleum burner and we can enjoy the evening all together sitting around the fire. If the tour is longer than 5 days we sleep one night in some hunter huts just to get our sleeping bags dry again.
Of course we also organize short hikes on ice, so that in the evening you are in a warm accommodation again.
The ice trekking tours are really something special! Walking over the ice you see so many beautiful structures in and on it during just one day! But not everywhere on Baikal you can have the great clear ice. The most part of the surface of the lake is covered with snow. So don’t expect to see a fantastic dark and clear ice everywhere you come to Baikal. Due to the main wind directions we have only few places on Baikal where the chances are really high to see the beauty of ice.
The best time for trekking tours over the ice of Baikal is from the beginning of February to the end of March.
